Players’ Compendium: Skills

1. The Skill System

In the Aytherfell RPG system, your skills are not just a number on a page. They are a direct reflection of your character’s experience and expertise. You improve your skills by simply performing actions related to them over and over again. The more you use a skill, the better that skill becomes.

2. Skill Tiers

All skills are divided into Tiers, which represent your overall level of mastery. These tiers are crucial because they define how your skills behave:

  • Skill Gain: The tier of a skill determines how quickly you gain new skill points when performing an action.
  • Skill Decay: The tier also defines the rate at which your skill will decay over time if you don’t use it.
  • Decay Interval: The decay interval sets how often your skill’s decay is checked.

3. Gaining and Maintaining Skills

  • Gaining Skill: Your skill level increases every time you successfully complete a task related to it. All tasks contribute to skill gain at the same rate.
  • Skill Decay: To maintain your mastery, you must regularly practice your skills. If a skill is not used for a period of time, it will slowly begin to decay.
  • Maximum Mastery: There is a maximum limit to the total value of all your skills. If one skill gains points beyond this limit, another skill must lose points to maintain your overall mastery.

4. The Challenge of Skill

  • Chance of Success: Every skill action has a chance of success or failure. This chance is determined by your current skill level.
  • Failure: A skill failure currently results only in the loss of any resources used in that attempt. There are no additional penalties or negative consequences for failing.
